Ultimate Flattering Swimwear Guide

Amee Song, fashion blogger of Song of Style, asks her team what style of swimsuit they wear based on their body type and what they like. It’s inevitable that as soon as summer is here, then it’s swimsuit season. Sometimes it’s difficult to find a flattering, comfortable swimsuit. So, I asked my team to share what swimsuits they find comfy and the most flattering for their body type. Also, I wanted to share what I wear and why. Here are some tips on what we all wear and what works best for Team SOS. Aimee:
Body Type: Slim
Preferred Style: One Piece, High Waisted Bottoms
Why: If you’ve seen my Instagram then you know I like high-waisted bikinis and one pieces. Why? Well, I think they’re super flattering especially for my body type. They’re also quite forgiving since you guys know how much I love to eat (especially my coconut chocolate balls). Also, they’re the most comfortable for me and high waisted bottoms are flattering for my butt. A lot of bottoms give granny butts, but I like when my cheeks show a little because I have a smaller butt.
My Picks:
Solid and Striped Polka Dot One Piece (I recently got this in an unboxing), Frankie’s Bikini One Piece Swimsuit, Midsommar Swim Gingham Bikini

Preferred Style: Cheeky
Why: Bandeau-style bikini tops and high-rise bikini bottoms are my go-to. Since I am more flat-chested, I like to draw attention to the lower half of my body. A bandeau-style bikini top is great because it feels like a crop top. I feel the most comfortable when it’s paired with a cheeky bottom. Also, I like to wear a button down as a cover up over my bikini.
My Picks: Solid and Striped Shirt Swimsuit (bikini version here), Frankie’s Bikinis Alana Bikini, Midsommar Swim High Waisted Bikini Bottoms

Preferred Style: Any
Why: I’m pretty comfortable with my body. Granted it took me awhile to accept the skin I’m in, but I did. With that being said, I still have my moments. I like to leave more to the imagination, so I’m all about the fabric being comfortable and my more intimate areas to be FULLY covered. This can be done in a one piece, high waisted bottoms, and even a bikini.
My Picks: Solid and Striped x Re/done Black One Piece (bikini version here), Frankie’s Bikinis Greer Bikini, Midsommar Swim Gingham Swimsuit

Preferred Style: One Pieces and Bikinis
Why: I’m not a fan of high waisted bikinis because they make me look even shorter than I am. I think a low back one piece that shows off your sides is a little understated sexy. Plus, one pieces make me look taller. I like bikinis too just because I don’t think you can’t go wrong with a classic silhouette.
My Picks: Solid and Striped Black Zip One Piece, Frankie’s Bikini Buckle Bikini, Midsommar Swim Ruffle Bikini

  1. So nice to see that you covered multiple types of bodies in your swimwear guide. But you didn’t mention the “plus size”. There are so many ladies out there who are plus size and face problem in deciding what to wear while swimming. You should probably target them as well. Anyway, the post is great overall.

This post is great! I am petite, 5’1″ and weigh 95 pounds. I am a 32a, waist is 24 and hips 33. I prefer one pieces over anything else because my torso is super short and my legs are long! I feel like two pieces in general just make my torso area look stubby, so to me one pieces give the illusion that my torso is longer than it actually is. Plus it makes my small butt look good and my legs look even longer!

  3. Oooh, what a fabulous idea Aimee! It’s great to hear what works for people of different body types and why. I have shorter legs, especially calfs, compared to the rest of my body (aka torso) thus I usually like to wear high waisted bottoms because it creates the illusion that my legs are longer than they really are because it looks like my hips and waist are higher up. Solid and Stripped is definitely one of my all time favorite swimwear brands, and I must admit, I’m still in love with their classic stripped one pieces too. I also love RedCarterSwim! Have you heard of them?

  4. Great post! I love that there’s so many more one pieces out now. When I go swimming or to the beach, I like to be comfortable and not worry about anything coming out lol! Plus I love a little modesty in my swimsuits and one pieces are so much cuter now than what they were.
