Remembering Nabile Quenum

January 21, 2018 - 39 Comments

While in Thailand I was given the tragic news that my friend Nabile Quenum, also known by his street photographer name J’ai Perdu Ma Veste, had passed away. It was difficult for me to process such shocking and unexpected news that I didn’t even cry when I first heard the news. I was just in disbelief. Lost for words. We weren’t best friends, but we were friends that met through fashion that kept in touch. Something more than just an acquaintance or a surface friend. Nabile was someone who not only was a talented photographer who I’ve traveled to many different cities together from New York to Milan, to Paris to even Kyoto, but had a genuinely friendly personality that stood out amongst the crowd with his circular glasses and next level stylish outfits. He was a positive light that went out too soon. My favorite dancing partner at any fashion parties. If I had known that this was the last time we would go dancing together, I would have hugged him one more time. The last conversation we had was over the holidays and was of course about dancing. Wow, can’t believe that was our last conversation. I wish I had asked him how things were going in his life. I’m headed to Paris today and honestly, I know fashion week won’t be the same without him and I feel like I’ll be searching for his face in a crowd of photographers. I’m really going to miss him so much. Please always remember to reach out to your friends and family with genuine conversations and honest, open arms. Small talk can be meaningless, but if you have a sincere heart then a short conversation can mean a lot. Nabile has made me think to ask more of my family and friends how they are. Not just a meaningless, standardized “Hey, how are you?” but more of “Hey, but really, how are you?” Even a text asking how friends or family are lets them know you care. I want to hear the truth if they’re doing well or are in a bad spot in life. It is about listening and remembering about the people close to you in life. You never know what you have until it is gone.My thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends during this difficult time.
