How to Layer When You Don’t Have Proper Winter Clothes

What do you do when you don’t have proper winter clothes? The answer is to layer, layer, layer! I packed a bunch of my winter coats to New York but since I don’t have as many winter coats as most plus packing thick winter coats all in a suit case is a pain in the ass, I brought with me several layering pieces.

I brought my flared jeans out to wear in the cold. I wore knee high socks underneath my jeans because the cold air kept creeping in. Love that flare jeans are making a come back although I wish I was super tall so I don’t have to wear them with heels!

This black bandana isn’t a fashion statement. As little and thin it looks, wrapping it around my neck made me feel warm! I got this shearling vest to wear both in L.A. and New York, but for the cold, I layered it with my J. Brand leather jacket.

  5. Winter is coming ;) Could it be that the name of your blog is actually the perfect wordplay with your name and the famous song of ice and fire books?

  6. Thanks Aimee – heading to NYC from West Coast Oz next week, similar climate to LA here. It still sounds cold there and even though it’s early Autumn here, it’s still hot – so this helps with packing ideas.

I really enjoy how you put this outfit together! You made me more interested in boot cut jeans as well. From looking at your style, you would absolutely love this place named Fixate Boutique! You go for the same kind of sense of fashion you should definitely go give them a look at fixateboutique.com

  10. Hi Aimee
I was wondering where you got the Chloe Clutch with the snakeskin strap? I only see the plain leather one from the link. Also do you know if that vest is still available?
    Thanks so much!

  11. The upper part of the outfit is amazing. I usually do the same thing just go out with many many layers. LOL
Hmmm…I am not big fan of that jeans and so not exited about their come back… but the rest of the outfit is amazing.

  12. Adore the 70s inspiration of these jeans, they are super retro and chic. The leather vest with the leather jacket is the most cool mix ever, it’s pure rock. This outfit is absolutely amazing, really original and so your style. The neck scarf is the perfect details and the clutch is fantastic. Wonderful

  15. Yes, layering is a great option to protect yourself against the cold!! You look stunning and I think your Chloe Clutch perfectly finalises your outfit! Xx Susanne – http://bagatyou.com

  16. Love this, when I moved to Singapore, I dramatically threw away all of my most beautiful sweaters and coats. Now when I’m back in NYC 4 times a year it’s nice to get creative like this.

  17. The best! Love layers, the shearling vest is such a good idea for winter..:)

  18. Great post. I packed two coats only into my suitcase last time I went on a trip & man did they take up a heap of space! Layering is such a good way to keep warm when trying to save up suitcase real-estate.

  19. Finally you are letting us in to the fabulous secret of how fashionistas deal with NYC cold. Thanks :)
I also love your approach at wearing flared jeans, I have had a pair in my wardrobe for years, that I have just been painfully wanting to make a comeback, and now you just gave me the inspiration to bring them out of hibernation.

  20. Omg, I’ve lived in a similar climate in Europe for my whole life and you’ve done layering lots better than me. Luckily winter is ending for this year, but for the next ones to come, I’m following your tips instead of just hiding underneath a huge parka and fur-lined hood.
