The Highs and Lows of 2014

Almost everyday, I try to think of the highs and lows of that day. Sometimes I’ll think about my highs and lows to myself, and other times I’ll share these moments with my sister, mom, and even my friends. This habit made me appreciate the little things, and makes me realize that even on the worst days, if you look carefully, there is still something to be grateful for. While thinking of 2014, I tried to pick one high and one low. My high was definitely the travels that I did. Here are my highs and lows of 2014.

Highs: I got to travel a lot and made so many great memories that I’ll forever cherish in my heart and I’m glad I also have photos to look back on to relive these memories!

Knysna, South Africa.
song_of_style_white_bow_bikinisong_of_style_cape_town_white_dressaimee_song_penguins_south_africaOne of my favorite places I traveled to was Kynsna in South Africa from earlier this year. Dani and I went to the game reserve, spent a day at a castle where Nelson Mandela once stayed, I bungee jumped which was scary but one of the most liberating experiences ever and closest I’ll get to flying, and even went shark cage diving. In Cape Town, we hung out with Penguins and tried to paraglide (Dani was willing to do it even though she was scared of heights!) but couldn’t because it was too foggy. My sister and I were always pretty close but we bonded even more from this trip and this trip made me appreciate nature so much. Dani and I couldn’t wait to go back to South Africa so we did go back several months ago for Sunglass Hut!

Cabo, Mexico. song_of_style_finders_keepers_schutz song_of_style_white_denim_overalls_mirrored_sunglass song_of_style_cabo_boat_ride song_of_style_beach_riot_cabo2I went to Cabo for the first time and had so much fun with the Rewardstyle team and fellow bloggers. I made really great friends with the girls on the trip and their significant others, ate tons and tons of Mexican food (which is my favorite food!) and I got to be with Wesley Mason. There were so many funny incidents that happened here especially with the boys being boys and one of the funniest inside jokes ever, involving dipping everything with ranch!

Essaouira and Marrakech in Morocco.song_of_style_morocco_essaouira_2 song_of_style_marrakechI’ve been to Morocco before and loved it the first time I went with my sister but this time, I got to go with my best friend Jennia and it was a different experience. I met so many great people on this trip that I am constantly in touch with and I also experienced a different side of Morocco.

Vulcano, Sicily
song_of_style_yellow_bikini_dolce_and_gabbana song_of_style_braid_zimmermann_flower_romper song-of-style-marysia-swim-scallop-bikiniAnother trip that my sister Dani and I got to go on together. I really have the best time when she’s traveling with me. We actually fought so much during our trip in Sicily but also made so many sweet memories. My sister isn’t really the active type but we biked around Vulcano, tried to speak Italian, took some mud baths and stank for couple of weeks.

Ibiza, Spain

This was so much fun because we all partied hard at night then slept during the day on the beach and really lived the Ibiza lifestyle minus the drugs. You can see my Ibiza Guide here.

South of France.
song-of-style-antibes-zimmermann-playsuitAfter Ibiza, I headed to South of France. I first went to San Remo in Italy then Nice, Monaco and Antibes. Antibes was actually my favorite because it was more like a quaint village and I made so many beautiful memories during this trip.

Lows: I lost my second mom to brain cancer.
MammaTIt was a long battle but I don’t think anyone can ever be prepared to lose someone. I still think about her constantly and the memories I have of her are thankfully so vivid. What I’m most grateful for is that we traveled together at least once a year and built so many good memories from that and my favorites being from the times we spent in Cozumel, Mexico and Aruba. This photo above is from Cozumel, Mexico, my first trip with her. When she was battling cancer, and the most important thing for us was to make good memories so we still went to Aruba. Ask any person who’s dealt with cancer in their family, it’s really hard both mentally and financially. Wesley Mason and I were constantly traveling to see her, and family members had to accompany her so that she could go get radiation and chemo which was several hours away from where she lived. During this whole process Wesley Mason and his uncle Lowell realized that even the average family could not really afford all the treatment nor the financial burden that it comes with so they started a foundation called Thompson-Mason Brain Cancer Foundation in hopes to help people who are in similar situation. Whether they need help paying their rent because they cannot work due to cancer, or even helping them change tires on their car so that they can travel to get cancer treatments. The foundation also helps people go on trips so that they can make final memories with their loved ones. Even though losing Momma T was so tragic, I’m happy that they were able to create something so great to honor her.

Awesome images and it’s wonderful that you get to travel around and see the world! Sorry for the loss of a loved one and it is great to know that a brain cancer foundation is formed to help those in need, such a meaningful cause! Personally, my high will be finally having the courage to start my own blog and my low will be related to some of the setbacks experienced in regard to my fashion business.

  14. Beautiful post. Some of my highs included a really successful semester at work and college, plus some amazing memories this Christmas. A low was some financial hardship that took a toll. Overall, a wonderful year. http://meowemily.blogspot.com

  15. This is such a simple yet good idea! There is nothing like looking back and realising how many great memories you created throughout the year.

My high would be meeting a bunch of new friends which I will always cherish and my low would be not taking enough time off to spend time with old friends.

    Happy New Year!! x

  18. One of your most beautiful and personal posts, Aimee! I love the concept of debriefing at the end of each day about the high’s and low’s. Definitely something that I want to try, as you said, it makes you realize even the worst day has a positive! I love your year’s round-up of your high and low. As someone who went through cancer treatment myself, your insight about the financial and emotional toll on family is something that definitely radiates with me. Have a wonderful New Year!!!
